Manufacturing process of ceramic pigment


The ultimate color of the colorant is greatly influenced by the addition of other components in the colorant. Therefore, in order for each batch to produce the same color tone, the same quality of raw materials must be meticulously weighed and mixed according to their composition.

Folding and calcining

Calcination is an important process for making pigments, and its purpose is to stabilize them. In the process of calcination, different reactions take place because of the different properties of raw materials and the different colors expected. The calcination temperature should be the same as that of the final product.

Folding and washing

After the calcined pigments are crushed, they should be washed in order to remove all soluble substances. Chromate pigments must be washed in hot water. If soluble chromates are left, irregularities of shade appear around the color. If borates are not removed, film will be produced on the color.


After washing, use the mill or ball mill to crush the fineness needed by wet method. Although the size requirement of pigment is not specified, the general requirements are all passed through 300 mesh screen. When comminution is insufficient, it will be difficult to use due to uneven particle size, and the lack of covering force will cause the firing to be spotted. On the contrary, smashing too fine as dust can not fully fuse in glaze and become the cause of rolling glaze.
